Project “Modernization of signalling and power supply facilities of Kaunas station, bypass Palemonas-Rokai-Jiesia and Kaunas-Kybartai line” technical supervision services

Category: Construction works‘ technical supervision services

Employer: AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai” (Lithuanian railways)

Period: 2009 – 2014

Partners: URS Infrastructure & Environments UK Limited branch

The modernization of section Kaunas-Kybartai-state border with the Russian Federation, D branch of IX Kreta’s corridor has been one of the key priorities identified in the Strategic Lithuanian national railway transport development plan for the year 2005 – 2015 and during the previous operational and technical studies.

The renewal of railways tracks, the restoration of railways upper track structure and earthwork allowed for AB Lietuvos geležinkeliai to maintain the existing capacity, and the modernization of the signalling system and related electricity supply system – to significantly increase it, to improve reliability and security of the railway corridor, to increase trains’ speed.

Our team supervised:

  • Installation of centralized stations and side tracks management from Vilnius Centre of Traffic Control (CTC);
  • Installation of computerized (microprocessor) centralization systems (interlockings) with local management capabilities and integrated (centralized) automatic track block signalling functions, providing one-way traffic in double-track lines, by the intermediate block signalling lights on main directions only, and in single-track lines – in both directions;
  • Installation of reliable train detection equipment, adapted to transmit codes, synchronised with automatic locomotive signalling (ALS) used by AB Lietuvos geležinkeliai with a reasonable minimum number insulating joints in the territory of stations and in side tracks all across the line;
  • Intallation of 33 microprocessor signaling crossing systems, operated locally and from the adjacent station, and from Vilnius CTC, in the crossings of the line;

Replacement of the 10 kV double-circuit power supply lines to the single-circuit lines, by changing all the equipment and materials and ensuring the necessary category of electrical power supply in the section between Kaunas (Palemonas) and Kazlų Rūda stations.
