Project goal – to modernize Lithuanian railways radio communication systems by implementing GSM-R. During the modernization the existing analogue radio systems were completely changed to unified GSM-R platform that fully satisfies all Lithunian railways radio communications needs for 15-20 years and has increased the traffic safety and made it possible to expand communication services.

Reasons for the modernization of radio communications:

  • The radio communications equipment used by Lithuanian railways did not meet EU harmonized standards so the Communications Regulatory Authority of the Republic of Lithuania demanded to replace it. The equipment was not certified.
  • The Communications Regulatory Authority of the Republic of Lithuania forbad the installation of new radio equipment without changing technology.
  • The radio communication system did not meet the requirements applied for 160 km/h speed.
  • The need for new communication services (eg. the opportunity to send a message of danger, even when the radio channel is busy; train stopping by using radio communications; diagnostic data transmission by radio communications, etc.) emerged.

Our team supervised the designing and installation of GSM-R radio communication system intended for voice communication, people and traffic safety, rapid transmission of uncritical data. GSM-R system covers the whole network of the Lithuanian railways - 1,779.3 km.
